Since Emmanuel LeChapelier started to race with a 1D Sails F16 we're continuously collaborating with him to improve the design of these sail sets.

The 1D team is continuously working on a newer, faster sail set with a decksweaper mainsail.  As we’ve designed and produce decksweaper sails for the F18 and A-cat classes since 2017, and for Moth sails since 2020 we’ll implement all the learnings into this new F16 design.

The 1D DeckSweaper sails are ruling the F18 class podiums since 2018 on local and international events. We’ve improved the handling and performance ratio in 2021 that also added to the performance of the teams sailing with 1D sails to win European and World championships.

New Material: UPE

 

This year, we’re excited to introduce a new material, UPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene). You may recognize this family of high-performance fibers, branded as Spectra and Dyneema. Like aramid (Kevlar) and carbon fiber, UPE is a high-modulus fiber, which means it’s extremely low-stretch—ideal for maintaining sail shape and maximizing speed. But UPE goes a step further with its toughness and durability. It offers superb UV resistance (outperforming Dacron), is hydrophobic (no water absorption), and is nearly impossible to tear or cut. This makes UPE the ultimate high-modulus fiber for cruising sailcloth, delivering a sail that’s highly durable, capable of carrying heavy loads without shape distortion, and built to last.

 

And, with its attractive silverish color, UPE doesn’t just perform well—it looks great too. This material also replaces Pentex, which has become increasingly difficult to source. Better yet, UPE is offered at the same price point, so you’ll get a higher-performing sail without additional cost.
