Where racing experience meets performance engineering.
Built on data. Guided by experience. Driven by ambition.
A New Approach to F18 Sail Design
The 1DRS28 series brings together two complementary worlds: the racing heritage and sailmaking experience of 1D One Design Sails, and the advanced engineering approach of MBSDES Performance Engineering.
Years of competitive sail development, real-world racing feedback and manufacturing expertise meet aerodynamic analysis, simulation and structural optimisation.
The result is a new direction in F18 sail development, combining refined aerodynamic geometries, advanced material distribution, redesigned panel layouts and innovative construction techniques.
Every detail has been reconsidered, from the aerodynamic shape to the way the sail responds to changing loads and trimming adjustments.
Beyond the Designed Shape
A racing sail is not a rigid aerodynamic surface.
Its flying shape continuously changes in response to aerodynamic loads, rig settings, sheet tension and sailing conditions.
Understanding these interactions is fundamental to sail performance.
The DRS28 development programme considers aerodynamic geometry and structural behaviour together, focusing not only on the designed shape, but also on how that shape behaves under load.
The objective is to develop sails with efficient aerodynamic characteristics, predictable handling and precise shape control.
Materials. Structure. Aerodynamics.
The DRS28 programme focuses on five key development areas.
Multi-Material Engineering
The MDRS28 mainsail and JDRS28 jib incorporate materials with different mechanical properties, allowing the construction to influence load distribution, deformation and shape response.
New Panel Layouts
Revised panel geometries and orientations have been developed across the range, with particular attention to structural behaviour and the intended flying shape.
Refined Aerodynamic Geometry
Updated camber distributions, twist characteristics, leech geometries and exit angles reflect the continued development of the aerodynamic design.
Redesigned Corner Constructions
New reinforcement layouts and construction details have been developed with attention to load transfer and structural behaviour.
Improved Shape Response
The development considers how each sail responds to changes in aerodynamic loading and trimming adjustments, with the aim of achieving more controllable flying shapes across changing conditions.
